Sports Trivia (Wushu)

65th Festival of Sport (FOS) – Wushu Demonstration will be held on 16 July (Saturday) at Olympian City 2. Let us introduce the different disciplines of wushu competition before enjoying the demonstrations performed by Hong Kong athletes.

Wushu is categorized into two main disciplines. To commence with, taolu is a routine competition. With the athlete’s physical abilities, proper handling of instruments, rhythm, and energy, athletes can choreograph a continuously connected set of attack and defence movements. Nowadays, there are 15 main taolu event categories, namely Chang Quan, Nanquan, Taijiquan, Taijijian, Daoshu, Jianshu, Gunshu, Qiangshu, Nandao, Nangun, Duilian, Baguazhang, Shuangjian, Shuangdao, and Xingyiquan.

The other discipline is an unarmed combat sport called sanda, including kicking, punching, throwing, wrestling, and defensive techniques. Each round lasts for two minutes with a one-minute break in between.  Athletes are required to hit his/her opponent’s head, trunk (chest, abdomen, waist, back), and legs, which are defined as valid striking areas. The athletes can claim victory if he/she wins 2 rounds or his/her opponent is knocked out.
