Sports Trivia (Table tennis)

65th Festival of Sport – 2nd Happy Table Tennis Competition will be held closed door on 24 July (Sunday) at Cornwall Street Squash and Table Tennis Centre. The paddle is the best partner of a table tennis player. Do you know the introduction of new rubber colours on the paddle?

Hong Kong Table Tennis Association and International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Equipment Committee proposed to introduce new rubber colours other than red and black at the ITTF Annual General Meeting in 2019. More than 75% of the delegates voted in favour of extending the colours on the coverings.  When deciding on the new colours, ITTF eliminated colours that could not be clearly distinguished from black surfaces and ball colours. Then they invited two professional players to test in two different environments at the table under natural daylight and in a professional indoor venue without daylight. ITTF eventually came up with four new colours: pink, violet, green and blue. The regulation of new rubber colours on table tennis paddles was made effective from 1 October 2021. One side of the paddle must be in black rubber, and the red side can be replaced by the four new colours as mentioned above. It is hoped that the paddle in different colours will look more eye-catching for the younger generation and attract them to play table tennis.
