Mr. Tony YUE Kwok Leung, Chairperson of the FOS Organizing Committee remarked, "The Festival of Sport marks its 65th anniversary this year with the sport-inspired message ‘Stride Forward Hand-in-Hand’. The last two FOS were unfortunately scaled-down due to the pandemic. As social-distancing measures gradually relaxed, the SF&OC with the support from LCSD launched a variety of FOS activities to encourage everyone to recharge their minds and bodies, whilst providing timely support across the community in preparation for the resumption of normal activities. This year we even introduced live-streaming of FOS competitions at our Facebook Fan Page for the first time, so that the public can support FOS and our hometown athletes from anywhere.”
In supporting social unity through sports, the Hon. Kenneth K.K. FOK, Legislative Council Member cum Vice- President of SF&OC said, “As an annual mega-event, the FOS has promoted ‘Sport for All’ in Hong Kong for many years. Sport does not only exercise one’s body, but also helps engage in uniting the community through sporting activities. With the FOS now an accredited event in celebrating the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the SF&OC will strive to commemorate this special occasion throughout the FOS.”
The three FOS Ambassadors, NG Kiu Chung (gymnastics), LEUNG Chun Shek (rowing), and LO Ying Chiu, Virginia (distance running) demonstrated exercises to encourage the public to engage in daily workouts and maintain good physical and mental health. In discussing the impact of the pandemic on training and the rescheduling of events, the Ambassadors also shared the fun of getting family and friends to engage in sports. Invited athletes from four national sports associations, The Karatedo Federation of Hong Kong, China, Hong Kong Wushu Union, Hong Kong DanceSport Association and The Gymnastics Association of Hong Kong, conducted sports demonstrations for the public to both inspire and promote understanding of their respective sports.
‘FOS Buddies’ from a number of secondary schools, year-grades and individual sports were also appointed at the event. They will participate in FOS activities in encouraging their peers to get involved in sports & exercise across school campuses. The FOS Buddies challenged the three FOS Ambassadors and elite local athletes in doing sports.
